Naturopathic Medicine

What is it?

Naturopathic medicine is rooted in the belief that the body's innate capacity for healing is the best possible medicine and that illness presents when obstacles stand in the way of that healing process.  An obstacle may be a pathogen like a bacteria or virus out of balance in the body, a specific nutrient level or overall nutrition being too low, the stress of a fast-paced lifestyle leading to digestive imbalance, a loss of a loved one or other kinds of loss.  Visits with Naturopathic doctors are generally longer than visits with conventional medical doctors, with extra time spent gathering physical, mental and emotional, social, and environmental aspects of your history and getting to know more about you as an individual.  Treatment modalities that are utilized often include dietary changes, herbal and supplement recommendations, lifestyle or daily routine changes, and bodywork or musculoskeletal adjustments.  Naturopathic doctors attend 4-year doctorate programs that include conventional medical subjects, diagnostic procedures, and pharmacology, and their education and training qualify them to practice as licensed primary care providers in 22 states.

What to Expect

In a Naturopathic medicine appointment with Dr. Jessica Hebert, you can expect plenty of time to share your health concerns and goals, appropriate labs and testing, education and fresh perspectives about your concerns, and effective treatment plans.   Attentive listening and thoughtfulness, and the encouragement and support for embracing food as medicine will also stand out.  Dr. Jessica is careful to listen for challenges that are unique to you so that the treatment can be more tailored for you.  The nutritional foundation plus the wide range of modalities that Naturopathic doctors are exposed to in their training help them to be especially skillful at working with people who have already tried a number of conventional approaches and not yet had success in their treatment.  All these skills are also helpful in supporting people in creating lifestyles that prevent illness and help you optimize your health both in the short- and long-term.  

Respect for the wisdom, theory, and usefulness of all systems of medicine is a particular perspective that Dr. Jessica brings to her practice.  She knows there are many gifted healers practicing within all categories of healers, from conventional Medical Doctors to integrative medicine practitioners to Naturopathic Doctors to Ayurvedic practitioners, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, energy healers, and more.  A metaphor that illustrates her philosophy about the wide variety of different systems of medicine is the story of three blind men each standing at a different part of an elephant--the trunk, a leg, the tail--and describing to the other men what an elephant is based on that position.  Every system or theory must start with some basic assumptions to build upon.  One important basic assumption of conventional medicine is that we are all separate beings, whereas a number of energy medicine systems are founded upon the principle of unity between beings.   Regardless of whether either or both of these assumptions are true or false, Dr. Jessica has seen situations in which they are both useful, and depending on which one is guiding the practitioner, the assessment of the root issue and the treatments will be very different.   Looking at your life and health through the lenses of different systems to gather additional perspectives is also an important part of how she practices.  Importantly, that also includes learning about and supporting your personal values and philosophy about healing and medicine.

 

What is Wholistic Mentoring?

Mentoring is a system for supporting character development, deepening self-understanding and topic-focused understanding, and achieving life goals in both personal and professional arenas.

Mentorship begins with listening.

Jessica's listening style is patient and curious, warm and compassionate, and open and experienced.  Everyone longs to be seen and heard.  Sometimes this may be all that you need in a session.  Simply being witnessed can anchor a process of self-exploration in ways that enhance self-expression, self-insight, and integration of life experiences without any other input needed.  Jessica's listening is both active and intuitive, supported by her years of experience both practicing and receiving different styles of listening.  Her listening skills are also supported by years of study and practice with psychological theory such as cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and depth psychology, as well as years of intuitive development through meditation, ritual, ceremony, and time in nature.  Mentoring also includes asking questions to help you uncover new sides to your explorations, offering fresh perspectives and creative potential solutions to help you reach your goals.  All mentorships are a collaboration between the two of us in support of your goals.

 

Some examples of goals for mentorship include support for:

  • Clarifying goals and visions

  • Integration after a healing ceremony such as a soul retrieval

  • Character development goals, such as wanting to increase optimism, forgiveness, or respectfulness

  • Understanding your individual intersections of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health through a combined intuitive and practical lens

  • Exploration of dream symbols and how they relate to your life dreams and healing

 

Tracking Your Progress

Jessica is skillful at both logical, step-by step tracking of your progress as well as intuitive, symbolic, mandalic tracking of your progress.  An example of logical, step-by-step tracking is recognizing how your achievements fit into different categories of progress toward your goals, such as consistently experiencing a longed-for quality in your relationships, or achieving a desired job change, or recognizing emerging leadership skills. 
Examples of intuitive, symbolic, mandalic tracking are understanding the progress represented by the evolution of dream symbols over time and recognition of the way that efforts toward a goal may or may not be productive when the results are not easily visible and helping discern between those situations. 
Consideration and reflection over time can help you know whether a long-term effort toward a goal that is challenging to track is more like spinning wheels and should be stopped or adjusted or if it is like the first snowflakes readying the ground before the snow actually sticks and a breakthrough becomes readily visible.

How are Mentoring Sessions Different than
Naturopathic Medicine Sessions?

Mentoring sessions do not include laboratory testing, medical diagnosis, or pharmaceutical prescriptions.  Also, mentoring sessions can include health goals but are not limited to health goals.  The goals set within a mentoring session can cover the full spectrum of life areas.  
When we are discussing health goals in the context of a mentoring session, there are a number of ways they can be helpful while still being distinct from a Naturopathic medicine appointment.  If you have received a prescribed lifestyle change or medical plan that you trust will help you but is hard to implement, a mentoring appointment can be helpful similar to health coaching for uncovering obstacles and creating a more detailed steps to support you in making the important change.  Another option is illuminating fresh perspectives about an illness and your relationship to it by exploring it symbolically or as a messenger.  Health is such an important aspect of how we experience life, so it may naturally find it's way into mentorship appointments that are primarily focused on another topic.

Healing touch is like a mirror that supports acceptance and relaxation.

There are so many different styles of therapeutic touch.  Focused attention on the body with very light touch and adjustments to position can be profoundly relaxing.  Even hands held close to the body without actually touching can be very impactful, unwinding, and relaxing.  Deep tissue, or specific pressure on chronically tense muscles or areas of tissue stuckness or adhesions can bring greater freedom of movement.  Stretching and rocking styles of massage can also help your whole body unwind and reset.

Techniques include your preference and mix of:

  • Fully-clothed massage sessions with gentle and playful rocking massage with movement of limbs and focus on requested areas such as neck, hands, and/or feet.

  • Swedish massage with flowing strokes for relaxation and supporting an interconnected feeling in the body

  • Craniosacral method and/or exquisitely gentle touch to support calming and grounding for highly sensitive people

  • Deep tissue and specific work on focused muscle groups for decreasing adhesions and pain relief
